There are very few home cooks that can claim to have impressed and blown the minds of several world renowned chefs. For Sydney sisters Sammy and Bella that is exactly what they did when they won Channel Sevens hit show My Kitchen Rules. The girls, coming from a fashion background, both quit their jobs to take part in the number one series, which has proven to pay off and given them a head start in the food industry.
Cooking is definitely in their blood. Growing up in the beach side suburbs of Sydney, the girls trace their roots back to their Polish heritage through food. Their grandmother Ula, who worked as a caterer and even cooked for Bill Clinton, is the main source of the girl’s inspiration. Their famous Beetroot Soup was their most traditional dish and a true testament to their Grandmothers influence. As well as a Chef Grandmother, their mother and great Grandmother are also amazing cooks, proving that the woman in the family truly do have a knack for cooking remarkable food. Their Families approach to “home cooked food is the best food” meant that they were always around a boiling pot, and helping out in the kitchen.
The celebration of female cooks is very close to their hearts. Rather than being seen as a boring housewives chore, Sammy and Bella believe cooking is as a creative and fulfilling outlet. As well as this, food is social, it brings people together. This is especially true for generations of women in families across the world, whose special connection is only strengthened through the passing down of recipes, techniques and a belief that food should always be cooked with love.
They also gained a great appreciation for fresh and wild food taking family trips to orchids, mushroom picking and fishing. They live by the motto that fresh and local is always best. Beyond this, Sammy and Bella have an enormous respect for animals and are ambassadors for the RSPCA. They believe in treating them with uttermost respect during their life (only buying free range chicken and eggs) but also in their death. Using every part of the animal, not turning up your nose to secondary cuts, and cooking with love all form part of this philosophy.
Sammy and Bella’s food career has now taken off. Since launching their own catering business, the twosome has catered for weddings, corporate events, private degustation dinners, huge cocktail parties as well as a swag of celebrity events. The girls are hard workers and don’t want to be known as just-another-reality–TV-personality. Working with food and staying in the kitchen (working up to 16 hours per day) has given them respect from industry peers as food professionals.
That being said, there is no shortage of work in TV – the girls are resident food experts on The Morning Show, and have appeared on Sunrise, Christmas with the Stars and New Idea TV (and even more projects are in the pipeline). Print media also keeps the girls busy – with regular recipe publication in New Idea, Cosmopolitan and OK! magazines featuring delicious recipes and stunning food photography and styling.
The future is very bright, with loads of new projects being announced soon… and as long as the girls can stay in the kitchen and continue to share their recipes, their mission is accomplished.
